New Delhi,UPDATED: Aug 9, 2023 23:50 IST
Congress MP Rahul Gandhi was the star of the Opposition bloc INDIA during the debate on the no-confidence motion against the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government on Wednesday, but it was his mother, former party chief Sonia Gandhi, who was calling the shots behind the scenes.
Throughout Rahul’s speech in the Lok Sabha, Sonia Gandhi was seen guiding her son to make sure his words hit the right notes. Sitting in the row ahead of Rahul, Sonia nudged him to address the Lok Sabha Speaker while speaking. Rahul was quick to follow his mother’s advice.
Later, while the INDIA members were in the well, it was Sonia Gandhi who appealed to Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury who was sitting on her right side to amp up the aggression.
Among the Opposition members, Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra was the first to shout back at the BJP MPs when they were raking up other issues. However, the scene changed after she went to Sonia Gandhi for a brief discussion. The TMC MP then requested the INDIA members to move from the well and to go back to their respective seats.
The last nudge from Sonia to Rahul came towards the end of his speech when she asked him to show the picture in his hands just once and then to keep it. Rahul then showed an old photo of PM Modi and Gautam Adani sitting together in an aircraft, and said the prime minister listens to only two people, Amit Shah and Gautam Adani, just as Ravan paid heed to only two people’s advice — Meghnad and Kumbhakaran.
Rahul also referred to Sonia in his speech on Manipur and said, “My mother is sitting here. The other mother, Bharat Mata, you (Centre) killed in Manipur.” He added that the central government “divided” the northeastern state into two parts.
