New Delhi,UPDATED: Aug 12, 2023 11:35 IST
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday slammed the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress (TMC) and said the party “played with blood” during the panchayat polls.
“TMC ne khooni khel khela hai…” PM Narendra Modi said in Hindi, as he virtually addressed the Kshetriya Panchayati Raj Parishad in West Bengal.
Further, the prime minister also accused the party of threatening the voters and ‘making their life hell’.
“Those who portray themselves as the champions of democracy are the ones who conspire to get rid of EVM,” said PM Modi.
Speaking at the event, PM Modi said, “The party had given a contract to goons and asked them to capture booth on the vote counting day.”
“The party was using ‘fatal attacks’ as its means to get the work done,” the prime minister said.
In the polls held on July 8, the TMC swept the violence-scarred local body elections, keeping intact the mandate it won two years back during the assembly polls.
The party won all the 20 zilla parishads in the state, besides winning nearly 80 per cent (2,641 of the total 3,317) gram panchayats and 92 per cent (313 of the total 341) panchayat samitis.
Reports said a total of 40 people were killed in poll-related violence in the month leading up to the panchayat elections in West Bengal.
On poll day alone, 21 people died.
